“Marijuana doesn’t have a high potential for abuse, and there are very legitimate medical applications. In fact, sometimes marijuana is the only thing that works…” – Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Neurosurgeon and TV personality
In the case of Patrick Lopez, the above quote could not be closer to the truth. Marijuana is the only thing that relieves his pain on a daily basis. Unfortunately, it took many years of trial and error with conventional medicine and in depth research before Patrick found cannabis. This is his story.
Patrick Lopez grew up in Cresco, Iowa. A small farming community of just 4,000 people. Since, Patrick can remember he suffered by debilitating stomach issues. Every morning he experiences intense contractions that cause nausea to the point where he cannot get out of bed.
In 2007, Patrick graduated high school and could no longer stand his constant stomach pain. He moved to a Des Moines, Iowa for college and decided it was time to see a doctor. He did not know this would lead to years of testing and pill experimentation. Patrick saw several doctors and was tested and treated for everything from IBS to Crone’s Disease with no relief. Patrick even drove an hour to the Mayo Clinic to be seen by the best doctors in the area, but nothing was helping. By 2009, Patrick was taking 12 different pills per day. Due to different effects of the pills, Patrick started gaining weight.
In 2010, the doctors started testing his brain to see if wrong signals were firing. He began being treated for extreme anxiety after other testing didn’t return any results. He was introduced to four new pills. The weight continued to pile on and Patrick suffered the side effects of all the medications.
In 2012, Patrick decided he needed to try another option, so he tried cannabis. He noticed a difference, but do to the religious community he lived in, the laws and the his limited access, he had to remain on his other medications. His weight was up to 400lbs and Patrick was desperate to learn more about how to end this nightmare.
In 2014, Patrick did a report on “Medical Marijuana” for a college course he was taking. He did in depth research and discovered a doctor in Israel names Dr. Rafael Mechoulan who has studied the medical benefits of cannabis since the 1960s. Through Patrick’s research he discovered that he might have a condition called, “Clinical Endocannabinod Deficiency (CECD).”
In 2015, Patrick decided to take trip to Colorado to do more research on cannabis and explore how it could help him feel better. Since cannabis was legal in Colorado, Patrick saw an opportunity to try different strains and products to discover which ones worked best to relieve his symptoms. Patrick not only found the best strains, but was able to use cannabis as a daily medicine during his trip and learned that he did not need his daily dose of 16 prescription pills. He felt better than he ever had in his entire life.
Patrick completely got off his prescription pills, packed up his family and moved to Colorado. Patrick began working at L’Eagle Services soon after he moved to Colorado and became passionate about their clean cultivation practices. Blue Dream is one of the best strains to sooth Patrick’s stomach contractions and pain. Patrick is not cured, but the cannabis allows him to live symptom and pain free with out all the side effects of the prescription pills. Patrick has lost over 180lbs since ditching the pills and lives a happy life with his wife and daughter in Denver.
